Great Bend Family Event Going on this weekend!

The Eastern Cascade Model Railroad Club is having their 16th annual Open House this weekend! It is on October 8th and 9th from 10:00 to 4:00 pm and is a ton of fun!

They have a great indoor train set up that is just incredible. You can watch all the different scenes they have going and see all the different trains they have running on the tracks! It is a HUGE setup and everyone stares at it in awe.

Then you can also ride on their Outdoor Railroad which is so much fun for the kids! Last year they had two different tracks going with a few different trains which was nice because the line was not too long!

Come check it out with your family! It is of course another great free event in Bend but donations are always welcome. The donations help them to keep the trains coming and to expand the tracks.

Bend Fall Festival is this weekend in downtown!

Presented by The Source Weekly
Hosted by the Downtown Bend Business Association

Event Description

As summer fades, fall gracefully eases its way onto the scene and provides a gentle landing into winter. A time to harvest and give thanks, to rest from summer’s endless pursuit of sunshine and to prepare for the flurry of winter; fall is the perfect time to give thanks and enjoy a community gathering.
The Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival, presented by The Source Weekly will bring a celebration of all things fall to downtown Bend Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Fall-themed activities-yodeling anyone?-music, art, and food will thrill attendees of all ages.
Two music stages, the Clear 101.7 fm Mainstage on Oregon Avenue and KPOV Local’s Only Stage in the Wells Fargo parking lot, will provide a mix of local and regional talent such as Supersuckers, Hill Stomp, Leif James and Moon Mountain Ramblers.
Be sure to visit the Carrera Oktoberfest Biergarten located on Oregon Avenue. Enjoy Oktoberfest entertainers with a pint of one of the rare beer selections from Deschutes Brewery released exclusively for the Fall Festival. Don’t miss the festival-wide Hops Happy Hour from 2 pm - 5 pm when all beers are a $1 off. Food vendors, Red Napkin and Spork, will be on hand with gourmet Oktoberfest fare to complete the ultimate Oktoberfest Experience.
The Food Court area located in the Wells Fargo Parking Lot with entrances on Oregon Avenue and Wall Street will offer a delicious selection of food options to satisfy any cravings that occur throughout attendee’s exploration of the Festival. Options range from local favorite Longboard Louie’s to the refreshing new-kid on the block Pho Viet Café and everything in-between.
The Artist Promenade located on Wall Street between Oregon Avenue and Franklin Street, will feature the work of over 100 talented artists specializing in a variety of mediums including jewelry, clothing, photography and sculpture.
Best of Jury winner Reiko Archer’s numo felted scarves are sure to please and are a must-have accessory for the coming winter. The Artist Runway showcase-a new addition to the festival- held on the Clear 101.7 fm Mainstage, will showcase other must-have items from lines such as Jonny Sport, Bella Sisters, Flood Clothing, and Blossom Mertz.
For the 11th year, the Souk de Fall Festival outdoor market is a shopper’s delight with a plethora of unique world items for sale. This area is located on Oregon Avenue between Wall Street and Brooks Street.
And it would not be a Fall Festival without a hay maze, pumpkin painting, wagon rides, apple bobbing, and an inflatables area. New this year is a costume swap where attendees can trade costumes to ensure they are not stuck wearing last year’s costume at Halloween. These activities can be found on Minnesota Avenue between Wall Street and Lava Road.
The festival’s offerings also include the Harvest Market and Conscious Living Showcase located between Greenwood Avenue and Oregon Avenue on Wall Street. The Harvest Market will showcase the bounty of our region’s best such as Severson Farms, Cada Dia Cheese, Chameng Family Farms and many more-allowing attendees to enjoy the tastes of fall.
The Conscious Living Showcase is a perfect partner for the Harvest Market as it features local businesses that are on the forefront of the green movement and businesses that promote wellness in life.
We are excited to partner with Dash for Dads, a mile-long race to raise funds to help cure prostate cancer sponsored by Bend Urology. For more information visit www.bendurology.com/dash.

Have you taken a ride on the Cycle Pub yet?

Cycle Pub, presented by Bend's Old Mill District

Bend, Oregon is known for cycling. And world class microbreweries. Cycle Pub gives you an opportunity to enjoy these two passions, and create an experience you and your fellow riders will never forget. It's a non-tradtional bike, where you sit and pedal in a non-traditional way, and enjoy non-traditonal features and beverages. For lack of a better description, it's a rolling pub on wheels, that you pedal.Cycle Pub Bend, Oregon

We invite creativity. In fact, we request it. The Cycle Pub isn't your average bike, and Bend certainly isn't your average town. When booking your tour, let us know what you'd like to include to enhance the experience. Pizza? No problem. Sandwiches? We know a great local shop. Guitarist? Sure, rock or country? iPod speakers? They're already installed. If you get too crazy, we'll let you know. There are some rules to ride you know, just be creative, be safe, and have a great time.

Tours typically run 2 hours in length. We can extend your tour by request, and the Cycle Pub can also be booked for the entire day to support your event or outing. Book early, as prime dates and holidays fill quickly. The bike can support tours of up to 14 people, and you can choose one of our pre-selected routes, or ask if we can accommodate your suggestion. Feel free to bring your own beer, wine, coffee or soda aboard, and any food or snacks to fuel the crew. We can stop along the way at the various restaurants and pubs throughout Bend, or take the scenic route and maximize time on the bike.

How to Jumpstart Central Oregon’s Economic Recovery:

Presentation Sponsored by Deschutes Economic Alliance Shows The Way
Bend, OR -- How does Oregon compare to the rest of the nation on the road to recovery from the current recession and what can be done to jumpstart these efforts?

The answers to these questions will be presented by Delore Zimmerman, Ph. D., in a presentation sponsored by the Deschutes Economic Alliance (DEA) on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., at the Riverhouse Hotel and Convention Center Ballroon in Bend. Everyone interested in the economic future of Central Oregon is invited to attend at no charge.

Zimmerman, President of the Praxis Strategy Group, will discuss the findings of a 2011 study commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce he coauthored with internationally renowned economist Joel Kotkin titled “Enterprising States: Recovery and Renewal for the 21st Century”.

“The study shows how states are finding success in attracting and growing business by redesigning government, curbing spending, modernizing the tax system and eliminating onerous regulations amidst dire budget situations and high unemployment,” Zimmerman says.

Zimmerman will also discuss “where Oregon leads and lags amongst the 50 states in its recovery efforts and how local communities and regions can use the findings of the study to advance their own economic development”.

“All business-minded, future-oriented Central Oregonians are fortunate to have this opportunity to tap into Delore Zimmerman’s most recent research into what is working, and what is not, as states across the country struggle to cope with the recession,” says Dave Lewis, DEA Co-Chair. “The DEA hopes this presentation will help further its goal to make the boom and bust economic cycles typical of Central Oregon a thing of the past.”

DEA is an all-volunteer non-governmental group of 100 business and community leaders formed in 2010 to identify and help launch initiatives to help stabilize and grow the region’s economy. The presentation implements part of the “1000 Day Roadmap to Regional Transformation and Economic Vitality” Zimmerman and DEA discussed with 350 community leaders at the Riverhouse Hotel and Convention Center last January.

Professional rodeo action consists of two types of competitions – roughstock events and timed events – and an all-around cowboy crown. In the roughstock events bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding a contestant’s score is equally dependent upon his performance and the animal’s performance. To earn a qualified score, the cowboy, while using only one hand, must stay aboard a bucking horse or bull for eight seconds. If the rider touches the animal, himself or any of his equipment with his free hand, he is disqualified. You can learn more about rodeos at http://www.prorodeo.com/

The Garner Group Mainstage 2011 Lineup:GarnerGroup_Horiz_web.jpg
Marc_Cohn_sm.jpgGrammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, Marc Cohn (8:30pm-10pm) and his full band will headine the Hullabaloo mainstage for a truly magical musical evening. Marc's career took off in 1990 with the recording of his critically acclaimed, self-titled debut disc, which yielded such classics as “Walking In Memphis,” “Silver Thunderbird,” and the lovely “True Companion.” A long-time pop music fan, Marc's most recent album, "Listening Booth: 1970" transforms songs from such artists as Cat Stevens, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Smokey Robinson and Creedence Clearwater Revival into tracks that are warm, soulful, more than a little sexy and full of easy-going charm. These highly personal interpretations say as much about Cohn’s own history – his experiences, his memories, his inspirations – as about the legacy of these songs.

FranchotTone_sm.jpg Oregon-based singer/songwriter/producer Franchot Tone (5pm-6pm) isn't a household name, thanks to his decidedly behind-the-scenes work on some of the coolest musical projects to emerge from the West Coast in recent years. But his sound is unmistakable: take a pitch-perfect pinch of vintage reggae and dub, a sun-fried splash of laid-back SoCal pop-rock, and a heaping helping of Meters-style funk and soul, and you've got Tone's brew. Over the past several months, however, a solo path has revealed itself, illuminated at every turn by someone else. Now, Tone is stepping up to the front of the stage for the first time. It's a new role, but one he's tackling with confidence and a sense that it's one he's meant to play. Over the past several years, Tone has built an impressive resume, both as a performer and as a studio wizard. His best-known work is as one half of the Culver City Dub Collective, the critically acclaimed band he shares with drummer Adam Topol. He has also performed on stage with Garth Brooks, Jack Johnson, Ozomatli, ALO and The Doors' Robby Krieger, and he has opened for The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals, and Michael Franti & Spearhead just to name a few. The list of artists Tone has worked with in the studio or produced tracks for is long, highlighted by Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Money Mark, Goldfinger, Tom Dumont (No Doubt) and Fredo Ortiz (Beastie Boys) and his own band, the Culver City Dub Collective.

MOsley_WOtta_sm.jpgThe moniker MOsley WOtta (6:30pm-8pm) is a play on the words mostly water, which reflects the belief that we are all made up of the same elements. All living beings are mostly water. That, more than race or species or gender is what truly connects us all to each other.
This live HIP HOP Band encourages unity through music and the celebration of our commonalities. Front man, Jason Graham's background in theatre and poetry are closely woven into every musical performance.

Hullabaloo Kids' Zone
Do your kids like bouncy houses, face painting, silly entertainers, rock walls, petting zoos, pony rides and general merriment with other like-minded kids? Well, they'll be happy campers at the Hullabaloo where we have all that and more! There will be plenty on hand to entertain and delight children of all ages.
Hullabaloo Food Court
Bring your appetite! Our Hullabaloo vendors will have plenty of tasty eats, treats and libations to keep you nourished and happy all night long. Look for an updated vendor list coming soon!
How to get here?
We've made it easy this year. Just hop on the new Hullabaloo shuttle from 900 Wall downtown, provided by GETIT Shuttle Service. It's FREE and service will be provided all evening from 4-10pm, with stops downtown at the top and bottom of every hour. See, we said it would be easy!
When you ride your bike to Hullabaloo, you can park it for the evening at the Commute Options Bike Corral. Bring your own lock and park it at the Corral on Fort Clatsop Street, next to Pisano’s Pizza. Commute Options encourages Central Oregonians to reduce their reliance on automobiles and we thank them for providing us with plenty of bike racks for parking. Don’t forget your helmet…

If you must drive, parking is available at Summit High School, High Lakes Elementary and in neighborhood streets. We ask that you be considerate of our residents and their landscaping when parking on the street, taking care not to block driveways.

A huge, hullabaloo thank you to our sponsors:

Come visit us at the Market!

Mirror Pond at the top of Drake Park, Wednesdays 3–7 pm, June 1 – October 12.
St. Charles Medical Center east parking lot, Fridays 2–6pm, June 3 – September 23.

Bringing Oregon’s Best to Bend Every Week

Bend Farmers Market is blossoming into one of Oregon’s leading farm–direct marketplaces, bringing together growers and producers with people who hunger for fresh, local, healthful foods and agricultural goods. The Market occurs twice a week at two locations. We’ve also continued to reach out to the community as the first farmers market in Oregon to launch a Farm to School program.

No Dogs We love dogs. But The City of Bend Ordinance No. NS-1974 does not allow any animals at Special Events except service animals utilized by disabled persons. Please keep your pets at home. Thank you!

Moving to a new state?

What to Consider Before Moving and Relocating to a New State

Long-distance relocation factors include schools, taxes, costs of living, transportation and more. Moving is almost always a challenge, but moving to a new state can be even more complicated. Here's a look at some common reasons for interstate moves and factors to consider when relocating.
Homeowners typically decide to move from one state to another for one of three reasons: a corporate relocation, a new job or retirement. Each of those reasons involves different criteria and considerations in the decision-making process.
Corporate Plans Pay Moving Expenses
Corporate relocations typically involve a transfer to a specific state that's dictated by the employer. But a job in one state needn't necessarily preclude a personal residence in another state, especially if the office is near the state border. For example, the south side of Charlotte, NC, is not far from South Carolina, which has lower taxes and housing costs.
Corporate relocation plans vary, but some employers will pay for one or more house-hunting trips, moving expenses, costs associated with the sale and purchase of your home, and basic living expenses while you're in between residences.
Discounts, Rebates Can Cut Moving Costs
Relocating to a new state without corporate reimbursement can be costly, so you'll want to shop around for discounts and rebates that can reduce your out-of-pocket expenses. Some membership clubs and warehouse stores offer rebates or preferential prices on real estate, mortgage and long-haul moving services.
If you decide to move across state lines to take a new job, you should research the local job market: If your new position falls short of your expectations or your company is down-sized, merged, acquired or closed, will you be able to find work near your new home or will you be unemployed in a place with only limited job opportunities?
Retirement is the primary reason why people voluntarily move to another state. Some choose to move closer to their relatives; others head for warmer weather. Considerations for retirees often include the tax structure and cost of living as well as access to top-rated or affordable medical care.
Here are some other issues to consider:
Schools. If you have school-aged children, the quality of the state's public or private schools likely will be the most important criteria in your decision of where to live.
Taxes. State income, property, sales and other taxes are well worth researching before you decide to move to another state. Some states have a very low tax burden; others will take a large bite out of your budget every year. Business owners may need to research state business taxes and costs as well.
Costs of living. Major categories of living expenses such as housing, transportation, food, clothing, recreation and utilities also vary from state to state. For instance, some states have high winter heating costs while others have high summer cooling costs. If you'll need to own a car rather than rely on public transportation, add the cost of the car, plus maintenance, license fees and insurance to your budget.
Weather. Climate is both a quality of life issue and a financial consideration. Bitter-cold winter weather keeps people indoors and increases costs for utilities, clothing and maintenance of your home and vehicles. Very hot summer weather also keeps people indoors and increases utility costs. Temperate climates may have much more expensive housing costs. (Some climates are plagued by annoying species of insects as well.)
Disaster risks. Severe weather like snow or ice storms, hail, floods, tornados, hurricanes and brush fires are other risks that vary from state to state. And at least one type of natural disaster-earthquakes-can happen in any sort of weather. Some of these risks can be mitigated with specialty insurance. It's worth looking into what type of special insurance you may need before you move to a new state.
